Description
Buddha’s disciples panicked when Buddha was about to leave his body and they asked for a final message of guidance from him. That is when Buddha remarked that after being with him for so many years also they still wanted guidance at the last hour of their Guru. The question was to what did they then actually learn all these years moving with the Guru that they panic at the depature of the Guru’s body and feel helpless. It was clear that none of them were prepared to proceed with life without the physical presence of their Master. More of all they took the Master to be the physical Buddha. The Buddha saw that his followers were afraid of losing their way. That is when Buddha gave the final teaching in one verse – “Appo Deepo Bhava…” meaning “Be your own light”.
This is what Osho and Jiddu often reiterated that noone saves you but yourself. But for the inner light to awaken, the intellect (buddhi) must awaken. Intellect is the Shiva’s son Murugan or Skanda. When intellect is underdeveloped, the Guru appears outside to guide you to the inner Guru. With the grace of the external Guru one is introduced successfully to the internal Guru (viveka), after which one’s guide is one’s inner awakened Guru. The journey for the ripe seekers.
