Of all the works of the Sri. Ramana Maharishi, UPADESA SARAM is considered the supreme legacy of His teaching.
Sri Muruganaar (Ramana’s devotee) was translating the texts of ShivaMahaPuran when he reached the text that spoke of Shiva teaching the Rishis about liberation by removing their ignorance about Karmakanda (rituals and rites). Since this portion was to be in the voice of Shiva as the Mahaguru, he wanted Bhagavan Ramana to complete this portion. In Murguna’s eyes, Bhagavan was a manifestation of Shiva Himself. Bhagavan was compassionate to write the remaining portions. These verses narrate Lord Shiva enlightening the ascetics of the Daruka Forests. These 30 verses that Bhagavan Ramana sung and translated became to be known as UPADESA SARAM that explains in depth the teaching of Shiva about liberation.
The background story from ShivaMahaPurana is this.
While the Puranas describe the householder ascetics life, their tapas shows that they were following the path of ‘kamya karma.’ This mean one emphasizes on deeds and performing rituals. They were performing tapas for a long duration and prayed to Shiva. They were staunch ritualists who believed that rituals karmas were the way to ultimate Bliss. They exhibited their ignorance by performance of various kinds of yagas and yagnas –sacrificial rites to obtain siddhis – powers for both this world and the next. They had become intoxicated by the use of mantras, yantras and tantras techniques. ‘Karma alone is of foremost importance; even God cannot prevent them from yielding fruits’ was their arrogant attitude.
They were not to realize that, whatever be the deeds, is there One Who provides the doer with the fruits? How can inanimate deeds automatically give fruits. Not realizing these facts, the rishis pursued their dogma of karma. These paths are prescribed by the Purva Mimamsa school which concerned with the interpretation and practice of Karma Kanda. This portion of Vedas relates to rituals and ceremonial rites.
In all His compassion, Lord Shiva appears to purify their minds by teaching the ultimate truth. This was to make them realise that actions are born out of ignorance of one’s own nature. Knowledge is the only way to the Ultimate Reality. So Lord Shiva’s makes his advent as a Bhikshatanar-beggar. Vishnu accompanies as his wife, Mohini, glamorous girl. In this form the Lord is naked but quite enchanting. His appearance is Urdhvalinga, with an erect phallus. So was Mohini. The Naked Lord came to the street of the rishis to get alms and Mohini followed Him. The rishis are attracted to the enchanting Mohini and started following her. They forgot all about their karmas. On the other hand the rishi pathinis, the wives, are attracted to the robust-built Shiva. They forgot what they were doing, allowed their clothes to fall off and followed Him. They were also dancing, singing and love-sick. The rishis get upset. They started to have double standards. While they were in pursuit of Mohini, they got upset with Shiva as their wives have lost their virtue by following a Naked Beggar. So they uses all the mantras and ritualistic powers to destroy Shiva. They performed abhichayagam which will produce bad effects. They directed snakes, demons, tigers, fire and drum that came out of the yagna fires against the Lord. Shiva was beyond defeat and made them all as ornaments. He peeled off the skin of the tiger and wore it round his waist; caught hold of the ball of fire in his left hand and held it aloft and calmed the serpent and wore it round his neck as an ornament. By now, Lord Shiva had begun to dance in joy. This irritated the rishis because the wives started to enjoy the dance. So they set up the monster against him, He dwarfed the monster, stood on it on one leg and continued his Tandava dance in Chidambaram. Vishnu and the others were charmed by this Ananda Tandava – Joyous Divine Dance of the Lord. Finally the forest dwellers realise Shiva’s true nature when Anusuya, the wife of sage Atri enlightened the sages that the Beggar couple was none other than Shiva and Vishnu.
PASHUPATA: Shiva later returned with Parvati and eventually revealed his Supreme form and exalted the Pashupata vow – by which a man restrains his passion, becomes celibate, and roams naked smeared with holy ash, declaring that such a lifestyle would lead to moksha. The forests prostrate at his feet and beg for knowledge. Lord Shiva led the ascetics from their low level spiritual maturity. They had to be elevated gradually from the grosser methods of spiritual practice such as puja, japa, dhyana and pranayama towards the refined method of Self-enquiry. Shiva takes His true form and taught that “there is only one thing here that is called the Self or God or Brahman. Whatever is seen in this dual world is only Consciousness and not different from it, and that perfect Blissful Consciousness You are.
Even though Self-Realization, or Atma Jnana, is attained only through the highest path of Self Inquiry, Lord Shiva knew that this sublime path would be beyond the scope of the ascetics due to their current spiritual immaturity and the gross state of their minds. Such minds needed to be refined and made pure for them to be able to dive deeper and understand true Self-Inquiry. They had to be made ready and hence the above three paths were given to prepare and purify their minds. Thus all paths, including the indirect ones like the pujas, japa, and bhakti paths of worship through a personal God, pranayamas, etc., must be respected and, in fact, even be embraced if need be, in order for the seeker’s mind to be ready for the direct path of Self-Inquiry.
UPADESA SARAM
Sri Ramana also offered instruction on every kind of spiritual practice for the benefit of those who were not yet ready to come to the direct path of Self-Inquiry. It is also well known that Sri Ramana gave mantras to many of his devotees and that one of his very close disciples was Yogi Ramaiah who was an ardent Yoga practitioner. This proves that Sri Ramana’s approach was broad and all-encompassing. He did not advocate the path of Self-Inquiry alone, though he did strongly recommend it. Therein lies Sri Ramana’s greatness. He welcomed and guided every kind of seeker, irrespective of whether he was a beginner or an advanced seeker, whether Yogi, Bhakta or Jnani. Even though his main emphasis was always on the path of SelfInquiry, which is a short-cut and direct path to SelfRealization, he knew that it wasn’t an easy method and that it required maturity of understanding. This is why he prescribed the three margas (paths). He clearly stated: “If, however, the aspirant is not temperamentally suited to Vichara Marga (to the introspective analytical method), he must develop bhakti (devotion) to an ideal – may it be God, Guru, humanity in general, ethical laws, or even the idea of beauty. When one of these takes possession of the individual, other attachments grow weaker, i.e., dispassion (vairagya) develops…
In the absence of enquiry and devotion, the natural sedative pranayama (breath regulation) may be tried. This is known as Yoga Marga… If an aspirant be unsuited temperamentally for the first two methods and circumstantially (on account of age) for the third method, he must try the Karma Marga (doing good deeds, for example, social service). His nobler instincts become more evident and he derives impersonal pleasure. His smaller self is less assertive and has a chance of expanding its good side…” from talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, Talk 27 – Sri Munagala Venkataramiah. After much maturation through the preparatory margas (Karma, Bhakti and Yoga), the path of Self Inquiry becomes naturally easy to understand in its true essence and the spiritual aspirant is ready to inquire into the Self.

And the way you conducted the session connecting various dots and also connecting with the stories we have heard from different religions, Vedas, Upanishads to the knowledge that was given in the Upadesa Saram…. Really loved the whole thing.
And as you say the key is to walk on this path and not get stuck into vishaya vasana where one can get stuck into the external world, which is always going to be there but as said atleast 50% of it towards knowing the self and towards the sat vasana, that was great.
Everyone is at a different level and different stages, so there nothing like right or wrong but it is all by divine plan and based on our past karmas that we are now at a certain level. Just walking on this path and being the true seeker will take us ultimately to the ultimate truth. So it was really really amazing and we both enjoyed a lot. For both of us now most of the time the discussions are only around these topics. So that way we are fortunate that both of us are walking this path,, maybe we have different levels and have different inclinations for the same path but at the same time we know where we want to go and we are blessed to have people and guides or friends like you, Manoj ji and many other who are guiding us on the path. Again, as you said, it is not anyone who does but it is the divine that is doing through mediums.
Thank you to you and all the guides whi are guiding us in this path. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Yesterday’s Upadesa Saram was deep and profound.
It helped me in rooting out my desires at the source with one of the upadesa mentioning about natural flow of Prana(life) and stillness of mind (temporary stillness yet).
Subsequently, it helped me in understanding importance of drishta bhav (witnessing).
Last but not the least, it also helps me in developing viveka (clarity and discrimination) on the path of self enquiry.
With the grace of Arunachala Siva, we can live in awareness throughout the day !

NEW ZEALAND ~ The seed of awareness and discrimination is starting to awaken in my being. The awareness in my being is very subtly directing me to leave the doership and surrender myself. My being is truly becoming more and more aware of what is not pure consciousness. Thank you for introducing me to my Self.
Greetings Jacobji 🙏
I would like to share my experience of yesterday’s Zoom session on UPDESHA SARAM.
The session started with a prayer. During the prayer, I saw a beautiful light blue, very serene river flowing into my ajna chakra. My whole being is resonating with this flow of divine river. As the flow reaches my anahata chakra, a clear firm voice from inside my being said, MERA ASTITWA SAMAPATH HO JAYEGA (my existence will end). I became scared. Within a fraction of a second, the flow of the river became calm and stopped flowing. I am saying to myself I should just surrender and why I paid attention to that voice. This dialogue is going on while the prayer was going on. (Yesterday, I forgot about the voice that said ASTITWA SAMAPATH HO JAYEGA because I was mesmerised by the beautiful river experience) Today as I am busy doing my daily activities the vision of the river keeps on coming and I am getting happier and happier. My inner being said it WAS THE EGO THAT SAID ASTITWA SAMAPATH HOJAYEGA. The ego knew that work was going to begin to destroy it. It came in between as my being was experiencing that beautiful moment. It was the ego that was scared. When I recall and see in awareness, I can see how the ego kept on taking me to the beautiful river because I was feeding it by being so happy and proud that(I) had that experience. By the grace of Gurumandala, Arunachala, and Bhagwan Ramana Rishi, the seed of awareness and discrimination is starting to awaken in my being. Full surrender and knowing that I am not the doer. There is higher consciousness that is working through me. Out of the 30 verses, these two verses are constantly flashing before me. It’s truly like an invisible being flashing cards at me with these two messages.
SURRENDERING TO SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS, DISINTERESTED IN ACTION AND SURRENDERING THE FRUITS OF ACTIONS TO THE SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS. I AM NOT THE DOER.
REGARD ALL FORMS AS THE DIVINE EXPRESSIONS OF HIM.
Now my awareness is asking why only these two verses.
My inner being is telling me, I have always said that I am raising my children, I am doing everything for my family, I am running this business and managing all people. The (I) in me is very profound in me.🙏 Now, by the grace of Gurumandla, Arunachala, and Ramana Maharishi, the awareness in my being is very subtly directing me to leave the doership and surrender myself and fruits of my action to the Supreme consciousness because it is aware of the (I) in my being.
Now, the second flash card.
Regard all forms of beings as divine expressions of him. The awareness is subtly directing me to stop scanning people and all living beings. Stop judging. Be compassionate. This action is very subtle and only takes a few seconds. Simply, the awareness is telling me to accept everyone as they are and see everything as an expression of Supreme. The awareness is guiding me to practice these two verses in real life as i move and work amongst all living beings. The awareness is guiding my being to be aware.
This experience of being able to experience awareness in a very subtle way has become possible through these divine verses of UPDESHA SARAMA. My being is truly becoming more and more aware of WHAT IS NOT PURE CONSCIOUSNESS. By the grace of Supreme Consciousness, I am guided to surrender and slowly let go of (I) the ego.
Jacobji, thank you for guiding my soul through this beautiful journey of UPDESHA SARAMA. Truly, my journey has just begun. Thank you for introducing me to my Self. Lots of gratitude.🙏
Journey to meet real me.🙏

It is a blessing to have the opportunity to not only just know that this scripture exists, but also get detailed clarity on each verse in the most simplified form in a 7 hour session. Verse by verse, it created a deep understanding of where we are, correlation of so many life events, other scriptures like Shiv Sutras, Sadhan Shikhar and most importantly, the blissful experience it led to and transformation it’s making every moment now. Though a lot more to practice the teachings of Ramana Maharishi, seeds were sown 😀. Since the time event started, had been listening to Updesh Saram verses audio on ramana maharishi website and contemplating more and more on every verse.
Thanks to Divine who made this possible and it was amazing being a part of this event. Gratitude! Gratitude! Gratitude!

GORAKHPUR, INDIA ~ This is a life-changing program for us. I understand how important these 30 verses are for self-realisation.
Thank you very much for making us understand the Updesh Saram in so simple words🙏
This is a life-changing program for us. I understand how important these 30 verses are for self-realisation. i learn how every incident in our life is divine will and how they are influenced by our past karmas. Without realising the real “I” it is useless walking on this path.
Updesh Saram takes us on the path of wisdom. Our every action needs to be so selfless and done in the witness mode.
Thankyou Arunachala
Thankyou Gurumandala🙏

CHENNAI, INDIA ~ Some vivid experience with light of Arunachala
Thank you bhaiya.
I have since today started reading the Upadesha Saram, verse by verse and also reading through my notes taken most attentively yesterday and mulling more intensely on it along with the summary given in each verse in the sacred book. In the Arunachala meditation, I do not know what happened. As we had done the forgiveness in the morning , I was feeling as light as a feather. Then when you sunk us into the meditation, and pronounced I am Arunachala, the mountain energy suddenly became bright light energy, my body too I started feeling like light and it started moving towards that mountain light energy as if a chord was drawing me closer. I started feeling scared for a second as it was drawing me , to such a huge ball of light. I was all dazed. Then I noticed my breath , it started shivoham breathing. For shivo I took in the breath, then hum, I was giving out and the mountain light was growing bigger. I really got very scared. But a thought came that it is being done with divine guidance so not to fear. expansion and contraction was going on thus. The expansion was getting vast and ,due to fear I stopped breathing , exhaling very very slowly. I was in that state for 5 minutes I guess , then you called us to come back , and slowly I limped back fully blank and dazed. Thank you bhaiya for your sincere efforts in grooming us into this practice.
